Inspiration

In the Appalachian area, estates were common.  These large farms were required to have a large workforce to keep the acres clean and productive.  Many tools and items were used by the workers so storage sheds, barns and outbuildings were plentiful in the Appalachian region.  Locks were used to keep the contents secure and the keys would be stored in a key hutch.

This wall hung key hutch would be located inside the farmhouse.  Keys to certain locks would be issued only by the estate owners to those as they were needed.

Although the key hutch is small in size it played and important role in overseeing the daily activities on an Appalachian estate.

Keeping with tradition I made my key hutch with simple joinery and common woods that are dimensioned thinner than usual.  The front of the door is like a blank canvas – carving was a common element to add flare.  This is a good way to personalize the key hutch and make it a prized wall hung heirloom.
