Buckboard wagons were used in the Appalachian area to haul items on the homestead as well as when traveling.  The rough terrain made the ride rough and uncomfortable.  The buckboard bench was usually supported by metal springs that attempted to cushion the occupants.  These metal springs would be made using blacksmith tools.

Although not needed today the Buckboard Bench is a great addition to the porch, patio or yard.  With a gentle rocking motion, it is comfortable to sit on while enjoying the great outdoors.

I prefer to obtain old, used springs when building the buckboard bench.  My design is reminiscent of the ones found on the old wagons used in the Appalachian area.  With quality hardwood and good joinery my design will last for several generations.
